How Decades of World Cup Experiences Helped Build the Foundation of SHG: 1994

The World Cup has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Memories from the 1986 tournament in Mexico, of Diego Maradona almost single handedly beating England with his full field “goal of the century” scoring run followed up with his “hand of god” goal over goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The spectacle of Azteca Stadium and the passion of the fans all forever etched in my memory.

In 1989 I was huddled around a small TV in a friends basement, the game was only broadcast on a rarely carried channel, watching with my father and best friend as we witnessed the “shot heard round the world” when Paul Caligiuri scored and the US Men’s National team beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 to qualify for their first World Cup in 50 years. The small but dedicated US soccer community rejoiced in qualification while quietly questioning whether our team full of college players was ready to face Europe’s best in the 1990 World Cup. My friends and I skipped out on high school classes to head home and watch mid-day World Cup games from Italy. After a rough start to the tournament, the US held their own against host Italy leaving fans with hope for better days ahead when we would host the tournament on home soil four years later.

When the World Cup first came to America in 1994, it was seen as a watershed moment for the world’s most popular sport in a country where it lived on the periphery of the sporting consciousness at best. I was lucky enough to attend four matches including Italy vs Ireland, Argentina vs Nigeria, Morocco vs Saudi Arabia and the semi-final Italy vs Bulgaria. The spectacle of the tournament left a lasting impact on me as an impressionable 19-year-old. In many ways, the World Cup was a building block for what would eventually become Seven Hills Global. The love of sports, travel, and events domestically and internationally are all part of the World Cup experience and embedded in the DNA of our hospitality agency.
